The 5 R's - Guidelines for Discipline
Students have the right to to learn, work, play in a safe school environment. To preserve this right, Ahuimanu Elementary School has established the 5 R's to serve as the basis for our discipline guidelines. Students are expected to demostrate the 5 R's throughout the day.
Here is an outline of the 5 R's.
RESPECT

Listen and obey teachers and other school personnel
Respect adult authority.
Understand and respect other peoples's rights and properties.
Maintain orderly behavior.

RESPONSIBILITY
|
Complete class and homework assignments.
Follows through with duties, jobs, etc.
Be on time.
Follow safety rules at all times.
Able to admit it when makes wrong coices.
Should do acts of kindness regularly.

RESOURCEFULNESS
|
Have a CAN DO attitude.
Try hard and persevere.
Try different ways of doing things.
Show initiative.
Creative problem solving.
Finding, adapting, inventing ways of solving problems.

RELATIONSHIPS
|
Get along with others.
Be courteous and well mannered.
Be considerate, helpful and honest.
Exhibit good sportsmanship.

RESILIENCY
|
Have the ability to bounce back
Have perseverance, they don't give up easily
Have positive attitudes
Can start fresh the next day

The students who exemplify the 5 R's and other positive character education traits will be reconized through the school's awards program. Students honored for the first time are reconized at an assembly with their families. Students who are repeat winnners receive certificates and are reconized in their classrooms.
The Star Theme
To help students to develop decision making skills that will last a lifetime, we use the acronym
S-T-A-R

S = STOP
|
Students should stop and think before an action. They need to give themselves time to become aware of what they are doing. They should think about choosing appropriate alternative. Examples are stopping before making a purchase, stopping before hitting another student, or stopping before talking out in class.

T = THINK
|
Students should be aware of choices and think about their alternatives. Thye need to develop strategies for thinking. Students can think about these questions :
Is this the best choice ?
Is there any way to accomplish this ?
What effect will my choice have on my parents ?
What effect will my choice have on me ?
What are my choices ?

A = ACT
|
Students need to realize that they are responsible for their own actions. Their behavior is what they do or think. Behavior has a conseguence. A conseguence is a postive or negative result of an action or behavior.

R = REVIEW
|
Students need to review their actions in order to evaluate their behavior. Evaluation is to exmaine, to judge, or to look at something in order to determine the effect or value of the behavior. Successful people always review their actions.
